Helping Haitians Help Themselves
Haiti is an incredibly beautiful country both in people and resources. However the poverty in Haiti is immense. We know we can’t help all that need it. But maybe we can help one - and then they can help their neighbor. Our philosophy is simple: Help provide these resilient people with the basics to live and thrive – education, housing, healthcare and food - and they will help their neighbor. We have found in walking with them on this journey, when one is helped, they are inspired to thrive in their own life and help their community.
When we started in Haiti, we saw that the churches and the schools are the backbone of the community. We helped build and support churches. We focused on getting behind churches to establish schools. When we found that keeping teachers was an issue, we raised funds to pay teacher salaries. With a shift to sustainability, we looked for ways the churches and schools could become financially self-sufficient.
We explored innovative ideas, like establishing small businesses that would help the church schools pay salaries. We backed local entrepreneurs to start rice mills in two villages. We supported the creation of a movie theater for another.
Our latest project is to provide homes to our partner village in Mauger. The houses surrounding the H3 mission house are made from scrap material and most have dirt floors. We wanted to reach out to our closest neighbors.
In all things, our goal was to seek God’s will and have the courage to carry it out. Looking back, we have accomplished a lot in the last 30 years. But it all started by trying to help one person, and in turn we saw that one person help another. It’s not splashy, but it works.
